‘Making Space’ offered multi-sensory, creative arts workshops for people with learning disabilities. The sessions allowed participants to explore a creative world where communication becomes a possibility. It was a journey of expression, through the experimentation of various unique materials, technology and art forms. The process of making, inventing, and creating, provided therapeutic elements in a way that participants might not have experienced before. Each week brought new experiences, and ultimately offered the chance for people to achieve and develop with their peers, using art as their language.
It provided support and encouragement in creative development each session, and built on skills such as confidence, communication, social skills, practical skills, motivation and relaxation. Making space served people who were isolated or restricted in independence and interaction. It not only offered a sense of freedom and belonging, but was the start of a social and creative adventure for each individual who joined us.
Making Space ran for a number of years, collaborating with different artists, makers, volunteers, colleges, young people and organisations, cullminating in a series of installation spaces open to the general public.
