WORK
All Things Equal is an immersive light and sound installation exploring balance, instability and interconnectedness, created in response to Brighter Sound’s Manifesto for Gender Equality in Music. Premiered in Manchester on International Women’s Day, the project was developed by Rebecca Smith (Urban Projections) in collaboration with Loraine James and Princess Arinola Adegbite.
The work moves through shifting states of equilibrium, using sound, light and spoken word to reflect on the ongoing process of rebalancing within the arts. Moments of stillness sit alongside more mechanical, unstable structures, with the environment continually adjusting rather than settling into a fixed state.
Using volumetric light and spatial sound, the installation treats light as a form of architecture - shaping the space through movement, density and rhythm. Slow transitions and sharper interruptions in light are closely tied to the score and text, creating an environment that feels both held and in flux.
Alongside the installation, the project included a mentorship strand with four emerging female-identifying artists, supporting them to develop skills in digital and immersive practice. Through workshops and collaborative making, the focus was on building confidence with technology and opening up space within the field.
All Things Equal brings together collaboration, sound and spatial practice to create an environment that reflects change as something ongoing - shaped collectively rather than resolved.
Rebecca shares her hopes for the project’s impact:
“I hope we can inspire a new wave of female and non-binary artists to feel confident using technology to express themselves, and to know that their potential is unlimited.”
