WORK
Flock is an immersive light installation using mist and layered gauze to create a soft, shifting environment shaped by movement and flow. Inspired by Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Swans Migrating, the work explores ideas of collective movement and migration through light and spatial form.
Using volumetric projection, the installation builds layers of light that move through haze and across semi-transparent surfaces, creating depth and a sense of constant transition. Forms gather, disperse and reform, allowing the audience to move through the space and become part of the visual field rather than observing from a distance.
The work was developed through a co-creation process with Inspire Youth Arts, Foxwood Academy and artist Sarah Palmer. A series of hands-on workshops invited young participants to explore pattern, repetition and movement through printmaking and mark-making. Using inks, textures and layered processes, they created a bank of visual material that responded to ideas of flocking, rhythm and collective behaviour.
These physical outputs were then digitised and reworked into moving image, forming the basis of the projected visuals. The process allowed the young people’s gestures and decisions to carry through into the final installation, shaping both the look and feel of the piece.
Flock creates a quiet, immersive environment where light, movement and audience presence sit closely together, reflecting on shared motion and the shifting nature of group dynamics.
