WORK

Meet the Hatter is a dance and multimedia production by Joss Arnott Dance, created to mark the company’s 15th anniversary. The work reimagines the Hatter from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, combining choreography, music and digital scenography to build a layered, theatrical environment.

Urban Projections (Rebecca Smith) created the projection and video design for the production, using mapped visuals projected onto a gauze scrim that sits within the stage space. This semi-transparent surface allows imagery to appear and dissolve, creating depth and a sense of shifting environment throughout the performance.

The projection operates as an active element within the piece, with the Hatter interacting directly with the visuals as they move and change. Rather than acting as a backdrop, the imagery functions as a second presence on stage - responding to the performer and shaping the space around them.

Visual sequences move between abstract forms and more recognisable elements, building a world that expands from the Hatter’s imagination. Light, motion and timing are closely aligned with the choreography and score, allowing the digital layer to sit in dialogue with the live performance.

Meet the Hatter brings together dance and projection as a shared system, where physical and digital elements work together to construct a responsive, immersive stage environment.
