WORK
Orbit is an immersive projection-mapped work by Rebecca Smith, co-created with young people from Inspire Youth Arts. Projected onto the walls of Nottingham Castle, the piece maps imagery across the building’s contours, windows and stonework, using its architecture as an active part of the work. It draws on the idea of the Overview Effect - the shift in perspective reported by astronauts when viewing Earth from space.
The work moves through a series of large-scale scenes, shifting from expansive cosmic imagery to close, bodily detail. These transitions play with scale and perspective, drawing connections between planetary systems and patterns found within the human body. An original score by Kirk Spencer shapes the pacing of the piece, guiding the movement between different states and intensities.
Developed through a co-creation process, the young participants contributed ideas, imagery and direction, helping to shape the final work. Presented across two evenings at Nottingham Light Night 2025, Orbit was experienced by over 21,000 visitors, demonstrating how large-scale, site-responsive projection can bring people together in a shared public moment.
