WORK
Recut, Retake, Regrow is a projection-mapped research project created by Rebecca Smith (Urban Projections) and textile artist Hannah Sabapathy, developed in collaboration with University of Leeds.
The work focuses on archival textile material from the University’s Cultural Collections, drawing on Kashmiri fragments and historical samples. These patterns are digitally cut, layered and reworked, forming a shifting composition that reflects processes of copying, adaptation and exchange between South Asian textiles and their British imitations.
The project also draws parallels with processes of recutting and resampling found in audio and digital culture, where material is continuously edited, reassembled and recontextualised. This approach informs the visual language of the work, with patterns looping, breaking and reforming across the building.
Projection mapping is used to translate this material into moving image that responds directly to architectural surfaces. Patterns expand, fragment and recombine, extending the logic of the original textiles into a spatial form.
Recut, Retake, Regrow brings together research and practice, using projection to reframe archival material within a public context. The work creates a connection between collection and site, allowing historical material to be experienced as something active and evolving.
