WORK

Second Nature is an immersive light and sound installation that brings live environmental data into the interior of St Mary Le Strand, using the building as a space to sense and reflect on the systems around us.

At its core, the work draws on real-time data - including temperature, air quality, humidity, signal pollution and wind - using it to drive both light and sound. These inputs shape a constantly shifting environment, where changes in the data are translated into movement, colour and intensity across the architecture. What is usually invisible becomes something spatial and felt.

Data is gathered from a combination of public sources and local sensors, feeding a system that responds in real time. The result is an abstract, responsive environment that moves between calm and instability, echoing the complexity of the natural systems it references.

Rather than explaining the data, the work creates a space to experience it. Second Nature invites audiences to spend time inside these patterns, considering their relationship to the environment through immersion rather than instruction.

The project was developed with support from King’s College London, National Gallery X, University of Nottingham and Epic Games Innovation Lab, and was presented as part of GLOW 3.0, a programme foregrounding women, non-binary and trans voices in digital and screen-based practice.
