WORK

Taal Yatra - meaning “journey of rhythm” - is an outdoor light and sound installation that transforms a forested landscape into an immersive environment shaped by percussion and movement. Created in collaboration with tabla maestro Shahbaz Hussain and an ensemble of international percussionists, the work invites audiences to move freely through a shifting field of rhythm and light.

At its centre is a live score performed across multiple traditions. Shahbaz Hussain’s tabla is joined by the Persian daf and doumbek of Arian Sadr, and the West African djembe played by Sidiki Dembele. Each brings a distinct rhythmic language, building into shared sequences where patterns intersect and expand.

The surrounding landscape becomes part of the system. Moving light and spatial sound respond to the performance, with rhythms triggering shifts in intensity, movement and direction. Light cuts through the trees, catching haze and forming temporary structures that move with the music, extending the performance out into the environment.

Taal Yatra brings together live music, light and landscape as a single, responsive system. Rather than a fixed stage, the work unfolds across the site, allowing audiences to navigate it in their own way - experiencing rhythm as something spatial, physical and shared.
