WORK
To mark the 50th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Urban Projections collaborated with Penguin Random House and Eric Carle Studio to create a series of mobile projection interventions across London.
Using the Light Cycle - a custom-built projection system - the work brought animated visuals into public space, projecting onto buildings and surfaces after dark. The imagery draws on Eric Carle’s original illustrations, translating their colour, texture and form into large-scale, temporary projections.
Rather than a fixed installation, the project moved between locations, creating short-lived encounters in different parts of the city. Each projection appeared without announcement, turning familiar streets and facades into unexpected sites for the work.
The Light Cycle allowed the project to operate with a high degree of flexibility, responding to different surfaces and environments. Projections were adapted in situ, working with the scale and texture of each location.
This approach brought the imagery into direct contact with everyday public space, using projection as a way to extend the visual language of the book beyond the page and into the built environment.
